André Breton stated that helping patients from World War I analyse their dreams “constituted, almost all the groundwork of Surrealism…interpretation, yes, always, but above all liberation from constraints – logic, morality and the rest – with the aim of recovering their original powers of spirit.”

Modernist narratives develop fictions where story and plot time are fractured, where story reflects on its telling, where cause and effect are implicit, and where social identity is unstable and fragmented. At the same time these narratives are motivated by a sense of order that appears not in the causal logic of transparent beginnings, middles, and ends, but in poetic metaphors, in symbolic registers, in formal designs. Its commitment is thus both to a greater verisimilitude and to an expressive aesthetic that conceives the work as, like W.B. Yeats, some artifice of eternity or like Wallace Stevens, a supreme fiction that has within it an expressive truth about the human condition.

Making and/or experiencing art, for James, involves reacting imaginatively and idiosyncratically to symbols and implied metaphors. Moving from general experience to the creation of a particular work that expresses and distils his individual responses to everyday life.

Les récits de modernistes développent des fictions où l’histoire et le temps de complot sont fracturés, où l’histoire reflète sur son récit, où la cause et l’effet sont implicites et où l’identité sociale est instable et fragmentée. En même temps ces récits sont motivés par un sens de l’ordre qui n’apparaît pas dans la  logique de commencements transparents, milieux, et fins, mais dans des métaphores poétiques, dans des registres symboliques, dans des conceptions formelles.
Son engagement est donc à la fois, autant une plus grande vraisemblance qu’un expressif esthétique qui conçoit le travail, comme W.B. Yeats, un certain artifice d’éternité ou comme Wallace Stevens, une fiction suprême qui  a, en elle même, une vérité expressive de la condition humaine.

Faire et/ou expérimenter l’art, pour James, consiste à faire réagir imagination et idiosyncratique à des symboles et des métaphores implicites. Se déplacer, de l’expérience générale, à la création d’une œuvre particulière qui exprime et distille ses réponses individuelles à la vie quotidienne.

Il était installé depuis la création de la Ville, l’espace d’information sur les licences Creative Commons vient d’être mis à jour.

No-Traffic Webcam
A series of photographs shooted through webcams found online.
Traffic webcam that are placed somewhere with the purpose of monitoring the traffic, but there is no one. No-traffic webcam.

Colour Field Webcam
Every few minutes, the system analyses images coming from selected webcams and convert them into pure colours. The more frequents colours are randomly disposed on a grid to obtain a real time “color field painting”, a dynamic artwork that varies depending on time and atmospheric condition, seasons and day light.

J’ai rencontré pour la première fois le travail de Marco Cadioli aka Marco Manray par hasard alors que je visitais l’exposition de Comet Morigi dans la galerie Overfoto de Second Life en 2008. Me promenant dans les espaces autour de la galerie je suis entré dans un atelier où était disposé des photographies prises dans l’univers virtuel Hipihi, la copie chinoise de Second Life. J’avais moi même exploré Hipihi à ce moment là, ou plutôt erré car le métaverse était peu construit et fréquenté, ajouté à des problèmes de compatibilité de mon ordinateur qui me faisaient apparaître les avatars comme des silhouettes noires sans têtes. Marco Manray en a fait de belles estampes rappelant les carnets des premiers voyageurs, ceux qui parcouraient le monde bien avant l’ère du numérique. Mais ce qui m’est resté de cette première rencontre c’est cette étrange impression, de regarder un univers virtuel à travers le prisme d’un autre, étant moi même derrière un écran. L’impression d’être happé par le vide, un vertige provoqué non pas par une absence de sens mais par une multiplicité d’interprétations qui peuvent être contraires.

Car ce qui fait la force et cette capacité de captation de son travail, c’est la beauté de ses images dont on ne sait plus si elle vient renforcer une fascination ou une critique de ces univers en pixels, de ces avatars courant vers nulle part, de ces paysages ou ces rues désertées (1).

Marco Manray a proposé, pour No-Traffic Webcam, un nouvel axe dans son travail, une observation du réel depuis l’internet. Des images issues des caméras de surveillance de routes à travers le monde.

Une nouvelle fois, je ressens ce vertige du vide que Marco pousse jusqu’à l’abstraction avec ses Colour Field Webcam, en référence au mouvement pictural des années 50/60  aux États-Unis et au Canada, dont Mark Rothko et Barnett Newman en sont des représentants.

Mais au delà d’une réflexion sur les bienfaits ou les méfaits de notre société technologique, n’est-ce pas plutôt une recherche plus spirituel que mêne Marco Manray comme nous le suggère le titre d’une de ces précédentes expositions empruntées à Leibniz, ? « Pourquoi y a-t-il quelque chose, plutôt que rien ? » Nos outils numériques arriveront ils à répondre cette question?

Cette exposition a été possible grâce à Zazu Susa, photographe dans Second Life et résidente dans AIRE Ville Spatiale. C’est elle qui m’a proposé d’inviter Marco Manray. J’en suis doublement enthousiaste. La Ville est un projet que chacun peut construire et faire vivre.

C’est donc « par hasard » que cette exposition a lieu à ce moment là. Elle s’inscrit parfaitement dans la continuité du sens et de réflexion global de ce projet qui continuera avec la prochaine exposition collective intitulée Synchronicity.

Marco Manray est un avatar, un avi pour les utilisateurs de sl, Second Life aka Marco Cardioli dans rl, le réel. Un des rares artistes qui nous offre un travail artistique pertinent sur les mondes virtuels ; mais au-delà, sur la toile, le monde de pixel qui s’impose à nous et se lie à nos vies.

No traffic est une œuvre en miroir, comme le dessinateur qui regarde le reflet de son dessin pour voir la justesse du trait. Le départ est la profusion de ces caméras de surveillance. Pas celles qui nous inquiète au quotidien, « big brother is watching us » !  Celles qui filment ces lieux de par le monde, celles que je peux charger sur mon pc et consulter comme des fenêtres sur des lieux que je ne connais pas. Des non lieux, ici, vues d’un autre non lieu, une simulation 3D : Second Life.

Ces images, Marco les a assujetties à des tableaux en mouvement, dans l’esprit de l’école américaine de peinture « color fields ». Les couleurs changeantes viennent d’images en direct, de vidéo surveillance. Il les détourne pour en retenir le champs chromatique ou poétique. Du vide, il nous donne un plein, sans dogmes, un questionnement ouvert.

Le travail de Marco Manray / Cardioli ne se reconnaît pas au résultat pictural, mais au regard réel qui questionne le virtuel.
Il nous a emmené sur le second life chinois avec un reportage photo sur cet autre double, ce monde autre vu par un œil occidental.
Il a décliné avec des accumulations de clones de l’avatar de bases de Second Life, une recherche sur l’identité. Il a photographié des paysages infinis et lunaires de Second Life… Berlin d’un double virtuel 3D à un autre Goggle…
Sa démarche est une mise en question de notre réalité augmentée, diminuée ?

Je porte à mes lèvres cette tasse de thé, respire le parfum, sent la chaleur avec mes doigts et ma peau, puis humecte et bois ce doux liquide qui m’hydrate. C’est réel !

I met for the first time the work of Marco Cadioli aka Marco Manray accidentally, while I was visiting the exhibition of Comet Morigi in second Life’s gallery “Overfoto” in 2008. Walking in spaces around the gallery, I entered a workshop where were photos taken in the virtual universe Hipihi, wich is the Chinese copy of  Second Life. At this time, I all ready had investigated Hipihi, or roamed I should say, because the métaverse wasn’t really built and frequented, added to problems of compatibility of my computer which made the avatars look like black silhouettes without heads. Marco Manray made beautiful prints of it, reminding the notebooks of the first travelers, those who went through the world, a long time before the age of digital technology. But what stayed of this first meeting for me, is this strange impression, to look at a virtual universe through the prism of another one, being myself behind a screen .The impression to be caught by the emptiness, a dizziness provoked not by a lack of senses but by a multiplicity of interpretations which can be opposite.

Because what makes the strength and this uptake capacity of his work, is the beauty of its images, which we do not know any more, if it comes to strengthen a fascination or a criticism of these universes in pixels, of these avatars running nowhere, of these landscapes, or these deserted streets.

Marco Manray proposed, for No-Traffic Webcam, a new axis in his work, an observation of the reality from Internet. Images coming from security cameras of roads all around the world.Again, I feel this dizziness of the space which Marco pushes until the abstraction with his “Color Field Webcam”, in reference to the pictorial movement in the 50s and 60s, in the United States and in Canada, of which Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman are some representatives.

But beyond a reflection on the benefits or harms of our technological society, isn’t it rather, a more spiritual research that Marco Manray is doing, as it is suggested by the title of one of these previous exhibitions, borrowed from Leibniz ? ” Why is there something, rather than anything ? ” Will our numeric tools, be able to answer this question ?

This exhibition was possible due to Zazu Susa, photographer in Second Life and resident in “Aire Ville Spatiale”. She is the one who suggested me to invit Marco Manray. I am even more enthusiastic. The City is a project that everyone build and make live.

It is thus “accidentally” that this exhibition is happening at this moment. It joins perfectly in the continuity of the global sense, and the reflection of this project, which will continue with the next collective exhibition entitled “Synchronicity”.

One of those artist who give us relevant artwork on virtual worlds; but more, about the web, pixels world which lay down to us and transform our daily life.

No traffic is a showpiece in mirror, as a draughtsman who looks at his drawing in reflection so as to test the accuracy of the feature.

The aplenty of surveillance camera is the beginning.
Not those who scare us every day, “big brother is watching us“!
Those who are monitoring places worldwide, those that I can load on my pc and watch as window on unknown places.
It’s non place, view here from another non place, simulation 3D: Second Life.

Marco linked those images to different pictures in movement, in the vein of the American school painting called “color fields”. The changing colors are coming from live images resulting from surveillance camera. He twists those images so as to retain only the chromatic scale, the poetic of colors. From the emptiness toward the broad. No dogma, but open questions.

We never recognise the artwork of Marco Manray / Cardioli at the pictural result, but at the real look that ask question on virtuality.
He took us with a photo coverage on the Chinese second life, this other double of life, this exotic world in the west point of view of this third and strange dual world.
He as declined with accumulations of clones from basic male avatar of Second Life, a research on identity.
He as taken pictures of Second life landscape, lunar and endlessly… Berlin, from a virtual 3D copy to an other one: Goggle…
His approach brings into question our reality, advance or reduce?

I bring a cup of tea to my mouth, smell the aroma. With my fingers and my skin, I feel the warmth. I Damp my lips and drink this sweet liquid that moisturize me. It’s real!

Judikaël Mauffret, musicien, compositeur et performer, vit à Paris.

Son oeuvre est fortement influencée par la nature. Sans entrer dans l’univers de “l’ambient music”, des “Drone music” et “landscape music”, elle entretient un lien avec les paysages sonores.  Musique à la fois introspective, violente, énigmatique et charnelle ; on y retrouve  toutes les facettes de cette nature  qui a enveloppée le compositeur pendant de nombreuses années.
Ses intentions en concert sont de créer et offrir au public quelque chose d’unique et personnel qui permet au spectateur de se sentir en un endroit et un instant “t” de partage de sensations diverses, antinomiques, abstraites, cognitives,organiques et intellectuelles.
Revivre la musique comme une expérience transcendante. Une vibration primaire, vecteur d’un voyage intérieur,qu’il soit partagé ou non.
La recherche du  bouleversement cognitif de l’auditeur dans sa perception physique et intellectuelle de l’oeuvre.

It’s Heaven de James Warren-Smith aka Pegasus Kohime

“La créativité individuelle devrait rendre la vie quotidienne plus émotionnellement acceptable.”

La base du travail de James Warren-Smith sont ses rêves, qu’il reconfigure en fonction du contexte d’une série particulière, actuellement en développement. Il y a toujours une structure narrative informelle à chaque série,  construction qui se fonde sur son imagerie onirique afin de transmettre une impression de sa vie introspective juxtaposées avec des  images de la société occidentale contemporaine. Le désir de  James Warren-Smith est de créer des œuvres d’une force singulière qui interpellent. Par conséquent, la récolte et la transformation créatrice attentive de ses rêves. L’inconscient est un maître pouvant engendrer encore des images insolites et des récits fascinants, malgré la tension qui sous-tendent souvent l’expérience faîte pendant son sommeil. Avec l’expérience, il est possible de diriger l’esprit inconscient, de s’appuyer sur une idée créatrice afin d’améliorer ou de résoudre un problème. Et c’est ce que l’artiste fera communément. Toutefois, cela ne signifie pas James sous-évalue l’imagination, qui transforme la matière première venue de son inconscient en création artistique.

The basis of James’ work are his dreams, which he reconfigures to suit the context of any particular series he is currently at work on. There is always an informal narrative structure to each series James constructs that draws on his dream imagery to convey an  impression of his introspective life juxtaposed with contemporary Western society.  It is James’ desire to create works of singular force and appeal. Hence, the attentive harvesting and creative processing of his dreams. The unconscious is a master of engendering unusual yet intriguing imagery and narratives, despite the underlying tension often experienced while asleep. With experience it is possible to direct the unconscious mind to build upon a design idea in order to enhance or resolve an issue. And this is what the artist commonly will do. However, this does not mean James undervalues the imagination, which transforms the raw materials of the unconscious into a finished artwork.

This installation presents a synchronous cut in the process of personal and collective changing.
It is a situation, a space where to pause and to experience with the perception and the thought.
A little while of STRICT PRESENT…
In the platform a vortex appears: downwards watching… the sensation of the abyss. Watching upwards, an itinerary to the light.

HARMONY is the fundamental fact that it allows us to live and to understand the universe.

In the NEON WALL the cycle of colors varies randomly.
Any rythm adapts to the cycle of colors in horizontal units. The vertical units interact with the structure of the tower in which we were.

To the other side I CHING of lights, allows us through Book of the Changes, to interrogate to the future and the present. (Follow the steps by clickin on the book …)
The 3 seats give 3 fundamental points of view us in the installation.
Further on, another series of pseudoneons, contains photographic images of the past, of RL…
All image represents a moment that it has happened already…

Further on, we can walk on the emptiness and arrive at a small forest of lights. Walk by him, sit at the turning balls and simply watches and leaves lights, colors and elementary forms fill to you.
Harmony and light.
You are filling your time with those experiences.

Harmony, music, light, thought. Sensations and feelings in the way and its changes.

Esta instalación presenta un corte sincrónico en el proceso de cambio personal y colectivo.
Es una situación, un espacio donde detenerse y experimentar con la percepción y el pensamiento..
Un momento de ESTRICTO PRESENTE…
En la plataforma se presenta un vortex: mirando hacia abajo…la sensación del abismo. Mirando hacia arriba, un itinerario a la luz.

ARMONÍA es el hecho fundamental que nos permite vivir y comprender el universo.

En el MURO DE NEON el ciclo de colores varía aleatoriamente. Cualquier ritmo se adapta al ciclo de colores en unidades horizontales. Las unidades verticales interactúan con la estrutura de la torre en la que nos encontramos.

Al otro lado el I CHING de luces, nos permite a traves del Libro de los Cambios, interrogar al futuro y al presente.
Los 3 asientos nos dan 3 puntos de vista fundamentales en la instalación.
Más allá, otra serie de pseudoneones, contienen imágenes fotográficas del pasado, de la RL…
Toda imagen representa un momento que ha pasado ya.
Más allá podemos caminar sobre el vacío y llegar a un pequeño bosque de luces. Camina por él, siéntate en las bolas que girany simplemente mira y deja que luces, colores y formas elementales te llenen.
Armonía y luz.
Llenas tu tiempo con esas experiencias.
Armonía , música, luz, pensamiento.
Sensaciones y sentimientos en el camino y sus cambios.

Installation sonore de Christine Webster aka Wildo Hofmann.

« Un son c’est de l’espace temps dans l’espace temps qui est le nôtre »

55 sounds to the sky c’est un périple au contact de 5 stations contenant 11 sons pour décrire 5 espaces/temps sonores. L’idée étant de paraphraser le concept de l’Axe de Shrödinger : partir du différencié vers l’indifférencié. L’échelle du son alors se rétrécissant au fur et à mesure de chaque étape.

Première station Aire Ville Spatiale – 51m du sol :
Sons d’ambiance réalistes et sons à forte connotation « sémantiques » évocatives d’un réel plausible …
Ce sont des sons enregistrés, bruts de la vie réelle.

Deuxième station La Souche – 194m :
Se situe au niveau d’une installation déjà existante qui comprend une souche flottante … Les sons commencent à être en décalage avec l’environnement. La souche sert de focus pour être encore un tout petit peu dans le réel et s’en échapper …

Troisième station Super Collider – 570m :
Rencontre entre deux méga structures de Werner Kurosawa – c’est un champ de forces – ça frotte – ça tourne – c’est énorme. L’idée du fantastique n’est pas loin.  Acousmatique bien sûr.

Quatrième Station Lignes de fuite – 863m
Lignes brisées. Effets de distorsion. Effet Leslie. Zone de forte perturbation tant visuelle que sonores.
On perd le contrôle. Psychédélique.

Top spot libera me ! – 1355m :
On s’extrait de la structure de la tour et on la domine légèrement … On se purifie – on respire – Ici que des sons continus, synthèse granulaire – flux très fin – échos – résonnances.

“sound is space and time in the space-time that belongs to us”

55 sounds to the sky is a journey trough 5 stations containing each 11
sounds in order to describe 5 kinds of specific sonic space-times.
The idea here is to comment Schroedinger’s scale relativity concept : so
we will travel from sonic material that got stong identification to very
tiny elements – the “scale” of sound will shrink step by step.

F*irst Sation Aire Ville Spatiale – 51m from ground :*
Very realistic Sound and ambiant matérial recorded from the “real” life
put on the station as they are : raw and with strong semantic connotations.

*Second Station La Souche (The stump) – 194 m from ground :*
I liked to put the second  stage in front of an ancient installation
wich present a stump floating in the air. The sonic material begins to
disrupt with the environnement. Thing begin to be shifted. The stump is
a focus, a last bind with reality … but how long can this make illusion ?

Third Sation Super Collider -  570m from ground :*
Encounter with two mega architectural structures buils by Werner
Kurosawa. Here we got a force field – gigantic elements are scraping and
rotating. It’s a fantastic vision. Acoumatic rendering.

Fourth Sation Persective Lines – 863m from ground :*
Disrupted lines and point of references – Distorsion. Area of visual and
sonic distrurbances. Loosing “control”. Psychedelic.

Top spot Libera me ! – 1355m from ground :*
We are extracted from the giant black tower – just above the top. We are
now purifing our ears and taking a deep breath. Continous sounds,
granular – fine flux – quiet but living material.
