« My Second Life art practice has largely involved moving physical prims around. I’m attracted to the smoothness of the motion, and the ability to manipulate gravity, mass, force, torque, and other physical characteristics we normally ascribe to objects in space. I’m also attracted by the limitations of SL’s physics engine – that piece of software governing all these attributes – which is occasionally overwhelmed at the enormity of its task.
This piece is a conceptual exploration of Werner Kurosawa’s Tower, and all the happenings inside it as currently installed at AIRE Vile Spatiale. The shape of the tower’s sections defines the trajectory of the prims as they “bounce” off surfaces on the way toward the bottom.
At the top of the tower, a single prim is released periodically down into the void. During its travels, that prim becomes two prims, they become four, they become eight, and at 870 meters (around the halfway point down the tower), 16 prims all converge at a rotating panel. As they continue their journey to the bottom, the process is reversed, until a single prim periodically strikes a collector on the surface.
Viewers can enable a sphere at the top, and ride it slowly down to witness all of these events. » Oberon Onmura, july 2011

According to Swann’s self verification theory, during most social interactions there is a general desire for outside evaluations which verify self-views; in other words, a wish to get others to see us in the way in which we see ourselves (Swann, 2011). Given that Facebook users create their profiles themselves, very much along the lines in which they want to represent themselves, self verification theory has become an important part of this project.
The aim is to achieve an understanding as to how persons may choose to introduce themselves in social networks, real and/or virtual, in order to attain states of self verification through identity matching: The avatar is expected to bring them to the notice of persons of similar facebook status, in terms of their interests presented in the FB arts and entertainments section.
Can avatar attire which reveals, rather than conceals a metaverse resident’s persona aid in the process of self-presence and (virtual) self verification? Can personal change be brought about through technologies which not only reveal our pixelated flesh, but also reveal the biological and cultural fields which we weave around us ?. Can social interactions be transformed and enhanced through virtual wearables which reveal our inner beings to those around us? Can novel states of creativity and play, of unique observations breeding new forms of authorship and understanding, come about through virtual candor ?

The project was initially intended for real life usage, inspired by an RFID based real life event which tied facebook data to physical bodies, launched in Israel in 2010.
However, despite this physical precedent it was decided to first discover the possibilities of identity matching through accessories and outfits in a virtual world. Thus, a metaverse resident who also owns a facebook account can utilize these attachments to project his/her interests to the outside (virtual) world.
According to Swann’s self verification theory, during most social interactions there is a general desire for outside evaluations which verify self-views; in other words, a wish to get others to see us in the way in which we see ourselves (Swann, 2011). The data is being taken out of Facebook via php and a Facebook api. Subsequently the data is sent to a server and from there imported into Second Life, where LSL is being used to embed the data into the objects which represent the various categories either by heightened/lessened saturation values or alternatively through different levels of transparencies.
Questions such as age, sex and geographic location appear to become increasingly less relevant in a metaverse environment, where people seem to interact mainly through their ideologies and their creativity which are taken to be standalone attributes which exist independently of the ‘real life’ persona behind the keyboard. Under such circumstances an avatar of androgynous appearance, whose adornments are created out of his or her areas of interest seems to be particularly apt design strategy.Since some kind of legend is needed to decipher visualization of the incoming data, the skin of the dramatic full avatar also serves as a legend. In the case of residents who wish to go for a more conservative appearance, a t-shirt, jeans and various colorized male and female skins are also included in the package.

My first concern approaching this project was to construct a building that would allow other artists to add to it, and the ability to enter and exit in various ways. I wanted to keep the construction simple, but also intriguing. Finally came up with a 12 sided (dodecagon) building, the entrances/exits also represent the 3 basic shapes of 3D modelling, square, circle and triangle.
I had previously made animated shadows for art installations in Second Life (SL) and had already started adapting a Muybridge motion photograph of a cockatoo before I was invited to join this project. My first idea was to have the build look like a surreal observatory and had added a telescopic type instrument to the build, after that I knew I wanted to involved the animation sequence of the cockatoo, and in such a way that when you looked into the eyepiece you would see the flying bird at the end.
Part of the difficulty with using Muybridge photographs for animation in SL is the grid system he used in the background, this would cause a distruptive flicker and the final outcome would not look like a smooth flying movement at all, so this had to be removed, also each image then had to be manually aligned, like the bird was flying in one spot, a similar process to how his zoopraxiscope works. Having 24 images to clean and align was quite a long process, taking over two weeks on and off.
Once the animation was in place, I decided it needed another element and then remembered as a child that I had had a very simple thaumatrope. The thaumatrope origins are a Victorian-era toy that was spun and two images on either side of the spinning disc, via optical illusion, appear to merge into one. One popular version of this was a bird in a cage.
In this version I want the viewer to decide whether the bird is in the cage or not (trapped or free), similar in a way to Schrödinger’s cat paradox.

Other Notes :

*Eadweard J. Muybridge & the zoopraxiscope
An English photographer is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion which used multiple cameras to capture motion, and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip.

*The Thaumatrope
Popularized by London physicist, Dr. John A. Paris in the 1820s, is a Victorian-era toy, the size of a small disk or card, with related pictures on each side. When the disk is spun by strings attached to the sides, the images merge. Although the thaumatrope does not produce animated scenes, it relies on the same persistence of vision principle that other optical toys use to create illusions of motion. Persistence of vision is the eye’s ability to retain an image for roughly 1/20 of a second after the object is gone. In this case, the eye continues to see the two images on either side of the thaumatrope shortly after each has disappeared. As the thaumatrope spins, the series of quick flashes is interpreted as one continuous image.

*Schrödinger’s cat paradox
Devised by Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. It illustrates what he saw as the problem of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics applied to everyday objects. The thought experiment presents a cat that might be alive or dead, depending on an earlier random event. Schrödinger’s Cat: A cat, along with a flask containing a poison and a radioactive source, is placed in a sealed box shielded against environmentally induced quantum decoherence. If an internal Geiger counter detects radiation, the flask is shattered, releasing the poison that kills the cat. The Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics implies that after a while, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead. Yet, when we look in the box, we see the cat either alive or dead, not both alive and dead.

Uranometria is the short title of a celestial atlas produced by Johann Bayer. It was published in Augsburg, Germany, in 1603 by Christophorus Mangus under the full title “Uranometria, containing charts of all the constellations, drawn by a new method and engraved on copper plates”. The word “Uranometria” derives from Urania, Muse of the heavens and “uranos” the Greek word for sky or heavens. Uranometria was the first atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere.
Plates of this celestial atlas were used to create a number of sculpted avatars which clamber onto a grid of metal pipes around which there float excerpts from Carl Jung’s foreword to Richard Wilhelm’s translation of the I Ching into German in 1923. This is one of the many texts in which Jung broaches the subject of Synchronicity, this time through an examination of the I Ching and the seemingly acausal relationships it brings to the fore of our consciousness. The full text may be read here:http://www.iging.com/intro/foreword.htm
I tried to create my own synchronous system of acausal relationships by juxtaposing Jung’s interpreation of the I Ching with one of the founding works of the early years of the Western Age of Enlightenment, the very first comprehensive celestial atlas. The sculpted avatars are symbolic of the visible/invisible meshes of acausal relationships in which we get caught up and from which there seems to be no easy extrication. They are sad my sculpted avatars – they cannot move any more than insects caught up in a spider’s web. Through them I ask the question of how much of our lives are directed by the undercurrent of a symphony of coincidences, encounters, concurrences and conjunctions…
